Silver boxes, dryer-vent arms, and sticker dials. The vent arms are what make it move like a robot. Sixty minutes, a medium build: a medium cardboard box for the torso, aluminum foil, and a flexible dryer vent hose. Move in straight lines and right angles all night; curves break character.

Tip: add a big red sticker dot as an emergency button on the chest.

Steps

  1. Safety: Cut the cardboard box slowly and keep fingers clear of the scissors. The dryer vent hose has sharp wire edges, so cut carefully and tape the ends right away.
  2. Wear the box over your head first.
  3. Trace circles for the head and arm holes, a little big.
  4. Cut the holes smaller than traced first. You can widen them later.
  5. Wrap the box in aluminum foil like a gift.
  6. Tape the foil flat.
  7. Draw two round gauges on the foil chest with the black marker.
  8. Stick the sticker dots on as dial needles and button lights.
  9. Hold the hose pieces against your arms to measure before cutting.
  10. Cut longer than you need.
  11. Cut hose cannot be fixed.
  12. The vent hose has sharp wire edges.
  13. Tape the ends right away.
  14. Tape the top of each hose piece to the shoulder holes of the box.
  15. Dress in the blue or gray sweatsuit.
  16. Slide the foil box over the head and arms.
  17. Press the sticker dials on last so they sit on the chest.
  18. Optional pro finish: add a big red sticker dot as an emergency button on the chest.

Common questions

How do you handle the sharp edges on the vent hose?

Cut carefully and tape both ends immediately so the wire ribs stay put. Wear the sweatsuit underneath so no foil or wire touches bare skin.

Can the kid see and breathe inside the box?

Cut the head hole generous and keep the box loose on the shoulders. Never tape the box to the head, and take it off indoors in crowds.
