Tip: edge the shell oval with a tan marker border and add a second smaller spiral inside the first.

Steps

  1. Dress the kid in the beige or tan clothes.
  2. Buy the headband and black pom-poms.
  3. Safety: Cut the cardboard slowly and keep fingers clear of the scissors.
  4. Draw the oval on the cardboard first.
  5. Hold it against the kid's back to check the size.
  6. Cut the cardboard into a large oval for the shell.
  7. Draw a spiral from the center outward with the brown marker.
  8. Tape the two backpack straps to the back of the shell.
  9. Make the eyestalks: tape two short cardboard strips to the headband, pointing up.
  10. Tape a black pom-pom to the top of each strip.
  11. Wear the shell backpack and the eyestalk headband.
  12. Keep the shell light and the straps snug.
  13. Optional pro finish: edge the shell oval with a tan marker border and add a second smaller spiral inside the first.

Common questions

How do you keep the shell light enough for a small kid?

Use single-ply cardboard from a cereal-style box rather than a heavy shipping box, and keep the oval modest. Tape, don't glue, so it stays light.

How do you keep the eyestalks standing up?

Use short cardboard strips, about 4 inches, and small pom-poms. Tall strips with big pom-poms flop over every time.
